Five Tips for a Seamless Moving Experience

{This post is brought to you by Moving Solutions. As always, all opinions are my own.}

We’re coming up on two years of being in our sweet little East Nashville home, which is crazy to think about! Prior to settling in here, we moved a lot for Dan’s job – from Chicago to Houston, Houston to Nashville. The thing is… moving can be stressful, whether you’re going across the country or just down the street. But it doesn’t have to be. I wanted to share a few tips and tricks that we’ve learned along the way that can help ensure a more seamless, stress-free process.

Purge Unwanted Items

If there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there is absolutely no use in packing up items you no longer use or want, just to bring them to a new place where you will continue to neither use nor want them. Ahead of all of our moves, I’ve taken a week or two to go through our home, room by room, collect unwanted items and bag them up. I typically donate everything to Goodwill, with the exception of some clothing items that I either sell on Poshmark or consign through The RealReal. It is truly a cathartic exercise, and you will feel so much “lighter” moving into your new space!

Organization is Key

Once you’ve gotten rid of the items you no longer want to hold onto, it will be much easier to organize everything you’re taking with you. When packing, go room-by-room. Think about the end game here – when you get to your next space and you’re ready to start getting unpacked, having everything organized this way is a game-changer. I always recommend investing in high-quality moving materials – big sturdy boxes, wardrobe boxes for your hanging clothes, separators for fragile items like dishes, heavy-duty plastic bins, etc. Label any and everything you can – love this label maker, but a good ole’ fashioned permanent marker also does the trick just fine!

Map Out Your Next Space

A place for everything and everything in its place. I’ll admit, it’s so easy to get tunnel vision and feel overwhelmed during the process of purging, organizing and packing. Especially if you’re like me and feel anxious when things are out of order. If you’re fortunate enough to have access to your new space prior to the move (even if that just means looking at photos on Zillow), take note of things like cabinet space and closets, and make a list of how you’ll plan to organize your belongings based on what makes the most sense for you and your family. When you arrive, getting everything unpacked will be a MUCH more seamless process.

Hire Great Movers

In my opinion, it is worth every single penny to hire a great moving company to get you from point A to point B. The amount of stress it eliminates from the situation AND from your body… a total win-win. Moving Solutions is a Nashville-based company that offers full-service moving – whether you’re staying local, regional or even going cross-country or to another country altogether. After getting yourself organized using the tips above, just get a quote from their team, schedule your moving date, meet them at the door and they’ll get to work! Moving Solutions has truly thought of everything… organized packing and labeling, careful maneuvering of your items to keep them safe and even unpacking everything for you once you get to your destination. In need of commercial movers in the Nashville TN area? They’ve got you covered there, too. While we don’t plan on going anywhere for a while, I will totally be reaching out to Moving Solutions when the time comes and recommending them to our friends in the meantime.

Don’t let the stress of moving get to you. Aside from the actual move, where you’ll have the help of professionals, you can always enlist friends to come over and help you get organized before the big day. Pay them in pizza and beer, put on some music, make it fun!

So let’s recap… Get rid of any items you no longer want or use. Take the time to get organized. Think ahead and make a plan for your next space and how it will be set up. Hire a reputable moving company like Moving Solutions to eliminate the physical and mental stress that comes along with the moving process. Sit back, breathe and relax.

I hope these tips are helpful if you have a move in your not-so-distant future. Do you have any helpful tips and tricks from past moves? Let me know in the comments and as always, many thanks for being here.
