5 Tips for Productivity

Let’s have an honest chat about being productive. Some days, I am ON my game. Others, I have a hard time juggling all of the moving pieces. I really had to learn the methods that work best for me to manage my time, which brings me to my next point… everyone is different! Find a way to work, and make it work for you.

So here are 5 steps I’ve taken to keep the momentum going with my daily productivity:

Find a planner that you love.

With an emphasis on the that you love part. I say that because there are umpteen thousand options out there, and it took me a while to find one that had a layout that is most functional for my day-to-day. I stumbled upon Live Whale Planners at the end of last year and after a little research, I learned that they offer both daily and weekly options. I went with the daily planner because it allows me to choose what day of the week/date combo I’m currently on and go from there, rather than wasting any pages if I happen to miss a day or two. I like having that flexibility! It is also a two-page layout per day, so you have a lot of room to make notes – I tend to use it as both a planner and my work notebook. It comes in handy when I have meetings or need to make notes/reminders about the events I’m putting together/freelance projects I’m working on. Another great thing about these planners is that they encourage more open-ended thinking – there are pages and sections dedicated to budget planning, meal planning, goals for the day, deadlines to meet, and to-do lists. I love that. It’s truly a multi-functional tool that helps me stay organized, and that price point is hard to beat!

To-do lists are your friend!

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be able to get ANYTHING done if I didn’t have a list – my daily to-do’s, grocery shopping, errands to run, upcoming blog content… you name it, I write it down. There is something so satisfying to me about checking off those items one by one. That said, there are definitely some days where my lists seem more daunting than others. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got for tackling a to-do list is to knock out the item you’re dreading most… FIRST. Just bite the bullet and do it – the sense of relief and accomplishment you’ll feel will give you the energy you need to do the next thing, and the next, and the next, until you’re all done. Then, it’s time for a glass of wine – you earned it!

Don’t stress the small stuff.

Hell, don’t stress at all. That may sound easier said than done, and this is hands-down the thing I’ve struggled with the most in terms of productivity. There have been times when I had so many irons in the fire and to-do lists that felt 10 miles long, and I would just get completely overwhelmed and shut down. And that certainly wasn’t helping me get anything accomplished. One thing that has helped me level myself out was incorporating Ashwagandha into my daily routine. I’m sure you’re like I was when I first heard about it… “Ashwa-WHAT?!” Essentially, it is a plant that has medicinal properties including relief from everyday stress and anxiety, immune system support, and balancing energy levels. There are a lot of versions out there, but this is the supplement I take twice a day. It is all-natural and derived from the Ashwagandha root, and after a month of taking it I can honestly say that it has helped me immensely with managing my stress and anxiety. Like any supplement, I highly encourage you to research what’s out there before committing – make sure it works for you! The moral of the story is that, if you’re dealing with internal factors that are keeping you from living your best, happy (and productive) life… there are a ton of natural options out there that could make a huge difference!

Take time to reflect.

Back before the holidays, I gifted myself this One Line a Day Journal with the intention of taking more time to be mindful and reflect on the events of the day. Not only is it a nice way to unwind every evening… I’ve also found that, by taking a few minutes to look back at what I’ve been doing, I get more excited about what’s to come. I hope that makes sense. This part of my life has been so eventful and exciting – I think I’d be remiss if I didn’t record it and have those memories to look back on someday!

Reward yourself!

Any Parks & Rec fans out there? Remember when Tom & Donna would have Treat Yoself days? Those were some of my favorite episodes, and I think that methodology works so well for fostering productivity. Think about it… say you finish up a massive project and you’ve put in hours of work to make it great. I’m talking a blood-sweat-and-tears type of project. And then your boss/teammate/whoever treats you to lunch, or better yet – a bonus or promotion! Wouldn’t you be more enticed to then keep the ball rolling for future projects? I know I would. It’s human nature. I think we should all do a better job of treating ourselves after kicking ass and being productive in our everyday lives too. Spent an entire Saturday Marie Kondo-ing your house? Treat yourself to a pedicure. Crossed off everything on your to-do list and got a head start on tomorrow’s list? Treat yourself to a glass of wine, an Oreo McFlurry… whatever your favorite treat is. I’m making more of an effort to congratulate myself for a job well done, and I encourage you to do the same!
